01Entry 1: Montreal Casino & Hotel
Montréal, Quebec, Canada
Parc Jean-Drapeau, on Île Notre-Dame. Two Expo 67 pavilions, France's and Quebec's, were joined to make this complex, and their sixties glass-and-metal outline is still what you notice first from across the river.
Food is the main draw for plenty of visitors: several restaurants, a few bars and a cabaret hall with a regular programme. Windows on the city side look over the water at the downtown towers. Gaming occupies a share of the building. Outside, the island has cycle routes, gardens and the basin built for the 1976 Olympic rowing races.
02Entry 2: Fallsview Casino Resort
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
The falls are the neighbour here. From its perch on the Ontario side, the hotel tower faces the Horseshoe Falls head-on, and high floors look down into the mist.
Lower levels hold a spa, a galleria of shops, a big performance hall for touring acts, and restaurants for most budgets. Gaming takes up one floor of a large complex rather than defining it. The Niagara Parkway and its riverside path start just below.
03Entry 3: River Rock Casino Resort
Richmond, British Columbia, Canada
South of Vancouver, on the Richmond bank of the Fraser. Bridgeport station on the Canada Line is right beside the building, with trains to the airport one way and to downtown the other.
The hotel side runs to rooms and suites, an indoor pool and a handful of restaurants, plus a theatre with a touring calendar. Boats tie up at the resort's own marina. Gaming is one department of the resort, sitting beside the rest rather than above it.
04Entry 4: Casino Rama Resort
Rama, Ontario, Canada
A drive north of Toronto, by Lake Couchiching and just outside Orillia. The resort is built on Rama First Nation land.
On one site: a hotel tower, a spa, an entertainment hall that books big concerts, and restaurants for quick meals as well as long dinners. Gaming is part of the offer. The lakes are the rest of it, and many guests come for an evening show and stay on for a slow morning by the water.
